Next week we’ll talk about the book as a whole, and the week after we start The Weather Machine, so try to get your hands on a copy. Needless to say, this may be a great time to invite new friends looking for stuff to do.
This week, lots about the self and the mind and how people have always sought to define something separate from the body as who they truly are, be it a “soul” or the ”self.”
Ehrenreich gets into a bit about how the “self” can be an impediment to what in her view is graceful aging, and concludes on how she views death.
As soon as I finished the penultimate chapter, I felt absolutely CRUSHED with anxiety and had to IMMEDIATELY move on to the final chapter in the hope that there was a “light at the end of the tunnel” to make me feel better.
It didn’t make me feel better, but hopefully I can get some LSD before I die.
I loved the idea of "We are gnawing away at ourselves without any help needed" and I thought it went super well along with the earlier chapters about the immune system.
Gonna save final thoughts for next week but I'll just say it: this has turned into a weird book to read lately, I don't know how anyone else has felt.
Have been sitting this one out pretty much as I see this book has become more of a science book, which appeals to me and I can't disagree with any of the science. But you are right, with Covid and these dastardly macrophages I feel like I have lost all agency, and just need to wait it out and keep my social distance - and pray that that will be enough.
